My Fan History: Laverne & Shirley & A Pre-Teen Kid

The year was 1998. I was an eleven year old girl about to enter the seventh grade in my small, rural town...

One summer evening, I was channel surfing on the couch, fighting off a bit of pre-teen summer vacation boredom. My mom was in the same room and stopped me as Nick at Nite came on the screen. "Oooh, Laverne & Shirley! You'd like this show, let's watch it!," said my mom. In retrospect, my mother was probably just trying to pick something moderately entertaining for us to watch that evening. But for whatever reason, sitting on the couch that evening, I became instantly hooked.  Beyond hooked.  And because Nick at Nite was airing an all-week marathon, my instant addiction was able to be fulfilled every other night that glorious week. "Lenny & Squiggy's Circle of Success" was the theme of the marathon - if by chance you remember this, you are now instantly my homeboy/girl, because this is some pretty random, old school stuff. But, hell, I'd buy a pork juicer from Leonard Kosnowski any day:

Where was I? Oh yes, that fateful summer of 1998. The week-long marathon was followed up by a notorious little thing on Nick at Nite called 'Block Party Summer.' Check this out if you want a little Block Party Summer blast from the past. Essentially, Block Party Summer was a classic Nick at Nite summer programming block, wherein each TV show got one night a week of episodes - L&S had full reign of Mondays, which suddenly became my favorite day of the week. The programming began at 9pm, which was pretty close to my bedtime in those days, but I got pretty good at convincing my mom to stay up until 11 or so for "just one more episode... please??"

It didn't end there. Towards the end of the summer, I realized that these episodes wouldn't be so easy to watch once the school year began, so I began taping them off TV in the last week or so of the marathon. Nick at Nite began airing L&S at 10:30 pm / 3:30 am, which is pretty much the worst time ever for a seventh grader whose parents wouldn't let her stay up that late on a school night. So, I began getting up at 3:30 am every day to watch (and tape) episodes of this show. What 11-year-old in their right mind does this? I honestly don't have a good answer to that. However, mornings soon became my 'me' time, at an age where having time to explore my creativity and just be myself was suddenly something I deeply desired. The years of 1998-99 also coincided with when my family first had a real PC with internet capabilities (Windows 95 anyone!?!). I started to realize just how many possibilities lay online - and I discovered the fact that the internet could be used to connect with other people around the world who shared this same, obscure passion that I had recently acquired - an unexplainable, but totally overwhelming, love of the 70's TV show Laverne & Shirley.

It wasn't long before I started my own L&S fan site, on the web hosting site Expage.com (anyone? anyone??). It was a valiant effort for an eleven year old that looked something like this:

Serious 90's nostalgia kicking in right now, not gonna lie. Anyways, suffice it to say, I found a great deal of comfort in the online fan community that existed in the late 90's, and saw firsthand how truly powerful the internet could be in connecting people across the world with a shared, common interest.

It's been almost 15 years since I watched my first episode of Laverne & Shirley, but I can't overstate the impact this silly little show has had on my life. It has made my laugh during tough times, given my an inspiration to exhibit creativity as a child and into my early teen years, and has come to symbolize so many different things in my life that I simply can't put into words.

Whether you're here as a casual fan or someone who can recite the words to every episode,  welcome all!  This website is intended to be a collection of the various Laverne & Shirley projects I have had fun playing around with over the years, and may expand to include various resources and community-like features based on interest.

In the meantime, please leave any comments or feedback below. Would love to hear how you first came to enjoy this classic sitcom and any other Laverne & Shirley stories you may have!
